Fatigue isn’t just tiredness. When someone is experiencing fatigue, they usually feel a persistent exhaustion that isn’t relieved by rest or sleep, as well as a lack of energy. This can have a devastating impact on everyday life and usually leads to secondary issues such as anxiety and irritability.
Persistent fatigue is a major and telltale symptom of myalgic encephalomyelitis, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia. However, it’s also a well-known symptom of a variety of long-term conditions including depression, Crohn’s disease and migraines. Fatigue is also experienced by many patients whose sleep disorders prevent them getting meaningful rest.
There is currently no good evidence that medical cannabis could help manage fatigue itself. In fact, fatigue is a potential side effect of medical cannabis because the THC content can sometimes have a sedative-like effect. It’s therefore important to be aware that certain medical cannabis products could make feelings of fatigue worse in some patients.
However, the sedative-like properties of medical cannabis can help people get better and more restful sleep. So, if fatigue is linked to insomnia or sleeplessness due to stress or chronic pain, medical cannabis could potentially help some people manage symptoms.
If your fatigue is new and has lasted a few weeks, or if it’s been accompanied by weight loss, mood changes, or gasping or snorting during sleep, it’s important that you seek medical attention.

What causes long term fatigue?
There are many conditions that can cause long-term fatigue. Most obviously, it can be caused by sleep disorders such as insomnia and it’s a major symptom of myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), also known as chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia. However, it’s also linked to a number of mental health conditions, chronic pain conditions and gastroenterological conditions.
New and unexplained fatigue should be checked by a medical professional as it could indicate anaemia, thyroid problems or something more serious.
Can medical cannabis help with fatigue?
There is no proof that medical cannabis can help with fatigue itself. In fact, the opposite may be true, which we’ll explain soon. But first, it’s worth noting that some patients may find medical cannabis a way to improve sleep.
Those who live with chronic conditions often experience fatigue because their condition prevents them from getting good sleep. For example, people with insomnia, who have trouble falling asleep or getting restorative sleep. Sleep trouble is also experienced by people with chronic pain, whose pain keeps them up at night, and those with mental health issues. Most notably, anxiety can cause sleepless nights and PTSD can cause nightmares or night terrors.
For these patients, medical cannabis could potentially help them manage symptoms of fatigue or tiredness by helping them get restful, meaningful sleep that allows them to recharge. This is backed by certain studies that highlight how medical cannabis can make it easier for some patients to fall asleep and sleep for longer.
The explanation for this lies with THC. This cannabinoid binds to CB1 receptors in the endocannabinoid system in a way that produces a sedative effect, shortening the time it takes to fall asleep. CBD, on the other hand, doesn’t have direct sedative effects but it’s thought to alleviate anxiety, which may help those who suffer fall sleep more easily.
Can medical cannabis make fatigue worse?
Yes, medical cannabis can make fatigue worse for some patients. As we just mentioned, THC in medical cannabis has sedative effects and fatigue is considered one of the most likely side effects of medical cannabis treatment. However, there’s no strong evidence to suggest that CBD has sedative properties, so medical cannabis products that only contain CBD may be less likely to cause tiredness.
Either way, fatigue is thought to be more of a risk during early medical cannabis treatment or when there’s a recommended change in dosage.
Fatigue in ME and fibromyalgia
Fatigue is one of the symptoms that characterised both ME and fibromyalgia. This sort of fatigue usually feels like ongoing exhaustion that rest can’t make better.
Over 400,000 people in the UK are estimated to be living with ME, but its causes are still unclear. However, what we do know is that many of its symptoms are linked to fatigue. Most notably, feeling tired all the time, insomnia, sleeping too much, feeling fatigued after physical activity. Some secondary symptoms, such as brain fog, are also rooted in fatigue.
Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition that causes pain all over the body, as well as heightened sensitivity to pain and muscle stiffness. Up to one in twenty people in the UK are estimated to live with it, but there’s currently no known cure. It’s often very hard to fall asleep and stay asleep with fibromyalgia, leading to long-term fatigue.
It’s important to seek medical attention if you experience fatigue that comes on suddenly, fatigue with weight loss, breathlessness or swollen glands.
FAQs
Can cannabis help with chronic fatigue?
There is no evidence to suggest that medical cannabis can help with chronic fatigue itself. However, there is some research to suggest it can help patients get more restful sleep, which could indirectly help lessen fatigue for some people. It could also reduce the psychological stress that fatigue causes by easing mental health struggles, including depression and anxiety.
Does medical cannabis make you tired?
In certain cases, yes. Tiredness is a potential side effect of medical cannabis that some patients experience. It’s most likely to occur at the start of treatment or when dosage is increased. Everyone experiences different side effects and some people don’t have any side effects.
If you believe your medical cannabis treatment is causing tiredness, please speak to a clinician who can advise. Don’t stop treatment by yourself.
Is medical cannabis prescribed for ME?
Medical cannabis is sometimes prescribed to patients with ME. This is because it may be able to help people manage pain and may also ease inflammation that’s responsible for ME flare-ups in certain individuals. However, every patient is assessed on an individual basis by a certified clinician.
