Dosing

Dosing is the application or administration of medicines. A dose is a specific amount or quantity of medicine that is typically measured in milligrams or millilitres.

Dosing refers to the administration of medications in a specific quantity, which is calculated depending on the product's formulation and concentration, and the patien's biological factors. An optimal dose achieves the drug's desired effects without negative side effects.

How is a specific dose of medical cannabis found?

There are several factors that are taken into consideration when determining the appropriate dose of medical cannabis products. This includes the patient's medical history, current condition, and previous experience with cannabis. On top of this, the type of product being administered, and whether it is inhaled, ingested, or taken sublingually, will also impact the dosage.

The first step in determining the dose is to consult with a specialist who is qualified to prescribe medical cannabis products, and provide them with a copy of your medical records. This will allow them to assess your medical history and identify any potential risk factors that may influence the dosage.

Next, the specialist will consider your current condition and symptoms. They will take into account the severity of your symptoms and how they have responded to other forms of treatment in the past. This will help them determine the right dose and type of medical cannabis product for your specific condition.

It is important to note that medical cannabis products come in a variety of forms, including dried cannabis flower, oils, tinctures, capsules, and even topical creams. Each form has its own dosing guidelines and methods of administration.

What is an effective dose of THC or CBD to treat pain?

There is no 'one-size-fits-all' approach with medical cannabis dosages.

The ideal dosage for treating pain with THC or CBD will depend on several factors, such as the severity of your pain, your body weight, and your body's tolerance to cannabinoids.

What is titration, and how does it apply to medical cannabis?

Titration is the process of adjusting the dose of a medication until an optimal balance is achieved between therapeutic benefits and potential side effects. In the case of medical cannabis, titration involves finding the right amount of THC or CBD that provides relief from pain without causing unwanted side effects.

Your prescribing specialist will be the one who ultimately decides on the ideal dosage size, but do not be surprised if they recommend starting with a low dose and gradually increasing it over time. This allows your body to adjust to the effects of cannabis and helps you find the minimum effective dose.

How long does it take THC or CBD to have an effect after being dosed?

That is dependent on a few key factors. Firstly, the method of administration plays a significant role. Inhalation and sublingual administration have a more rapid onset, taking effect within minutes, while orally administered products can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to take effect. Your individual body chemistry and tolerance level can also affect how quickly you feel the effects. It is important to be patient when titrating your dose and to communicate any changes in symptoms or side effects with your prescribing specialist.

It is also worth noting that everyone's optimal dosage will vary because of individual differences in metabolism, weight, and overall health. It is crucial to work closely with your prescribing specialist to find the right dosage for your unique health needs.
