CO₂ Extraction

CO₂ extraction, or CO₂ supercritical extraction, is a clean and efficient method of extracting therapeutically active compounds from cannabis plants. This process uses pressurized carbon dioxide to strip the trichomes (where the cannabinoids and terpenes are located) from the plant material, resulting in a potent extract.

CO₂ extraction is a technique that forces supercritical carbon dioxide through the cannabis plant to draw out their chemical contents. This method of extraction results in cannabis concentrations that can contain a range of flavonoids, cannabinoids, and terpenes, and are commonly referred to as CO₂ oils.

Is CO₂ extraction commonly used for medical cannabis oils?

Yes, in the UK, CO₂ supercritical extraction is the most often used method for producing medical cannabis oils. This is because it results in a cleaner and more precise extraction compared to other methods such as butane or ethanol extraction.

Why is CO₂ extraction cleaner than other extraction methods?

CO₂ extraction is considered cleaner because it does not require any harmful solvents. Butane and ethanol extractions, for example, can leave behind residual chemicals that may harm a patient's health when administered. CO₂ extraction also allows for precise control over temperature and pressure, leading to a more effective and focused extraction process.

What are the benefits of CO₂ extraction for medical cannabis oils?

One of the greatest benefits of CO₂ extraction is its ability to produce high-quality, concentrated extracts. This is important for medical cannabis oil production, as it allows for a more potent and consistent product. CO₂ extraction is also considered very environmentally friendly, as it does not produce any toxic by-products or waste.

Are there any downsides to using CO₂ extraction?

While CO₂ extraction comes with a range of advantages, it can also be expensive, requiring specialised equipment and trained professionals. This is one of the reasons why CO₂ extracted medical cannabis oils may be more costly than other types of extracts on the market.
