Wasting Syndrome

Also referred to as cachexia, wasting syndrome is a condition where the body experiences severe weight loss, muscle mass loss, fatigue, weakness, and reduced appetite. It is a common secondary diagnosis for patients suffering from chronic conditions, AIDS/HIV, and cancer. Wasting syndrome is a serious issue and can have a huge impact on both treatment outcomes and the quality of life for affected patients.

Can medical cannabis help alleviate symptoms associated with wasting syndrome?

While there is limited research on the use of medical cannabis for wasting syndrome specifically, medical cannabis has been shown to help with many of the symptoms associated with the condition.

How does medical cannabis help with weight loss and increased appetite?

When THC binds to the CB1 receptor (one of the two endocannabinoid system receptors), it can stimulate appetite and the desire for a patient suffering from wasting syndrome to eat. Treatments such as chemotherapy put a heavy burden on the body and can essentially shut down the hunger centre of the brain, leading to a loss of appetite.

Medical cannabis can help reverse this effect and increase appetite, leading to weight gain and improved overall health.

How does medical cannabis help with muscle mass loss, fatigue, and low mood?

The simple fact that THC increases hunger results in patients being able to stop the rapid mass loss that is common with wasting syndrome. Additionally, THC can also increase energy levels and combat fatigue, helping patients feel more energised and able to engage in physical activity.

In terms of combating the low mood that often accompanies wasting syndrome, one of the most well-known effects of THC is its ability to produce feelings of euphoria and relaxation. Quality of life is sometimes an afterthought, but for patients suffering from chronic, life-limiting illnesses, it is a crucial factor not only over-all well-being, but also treatment success.
