Irradiated
When cannabis is irradiated, it has been treated with a type of ionising radiation that reduces the presence of bacteria, viruses, and fungi in plant matter.
Irradiated medical cannabis is often prescribed for patients suffering with a compromised immune system or a chronic illness.
Is all medical cannabis flower irradiated?
No, in the UK, patients can be prescribed both non-irradiated and irradiated medical cannabis flower. The decision to prescribe irradiated flower is made on a case-by-case basis by the prescribing doctor after an MDT review.
Is irradiated medical cannabis better?
That really depends on your specific health needs.
Irradiating medical cannabis flower does reduce the risk of harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi being ingested by patients with compromised immune systems. That said, some experts argue that irradiation may also change the chemical composition of the flower, potentially altering its therapeutic effects.
The decision on whether a Releaf patient will be prescribed either irradiated or non-irradiated medical cannabis flower will be made after an in-depth initial consultation with a specialist listed on the GMC Specialist Register, who will then take the patient's case to our Multidisciplinary Team review where they will discuss all the relevant aspects of the patient's condition, medical history, and personal preferences.
During this review, the team will consider factors such as the patient's symptoms, previous treatments, and overall health. The decision to prescribe irradiated or non-irradiated cannabis flower is based on ensuring the highest level of safety, efficacy, and quality for each individual patient.
