Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol

Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol is a minor psychoactive cannabinoid that is similar to Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, more commonly known as THC.

As it is typically found in low concentrations in natural cannabis and hemp plants, Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol is often manufactured synthetically in laboratories to be used as an ingredient in cannabis-based products. As well as resembling Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in chemical structure, Delta-8-THC is said to induce similar, but less intense, intoxicating effects.

What is the difference between Delta-8-THC and Delta-9-THC?

The main difference between Delta-8-THC and Delta-9-THC lies in their chemical structures and the resulting psychoactive effects.

Delta-9-THC is the most abundant and potent form of THC produced by cannabis plants, and is primarily responsible for the 'high' associated with cannabis use.

Delta-8-THC is less potent, offering users and patients milder psychoactive effects. Some people prefer the lower psychoactivity of D8-THC for managing symptoms. Despite these differences, both compounds interact with the endocannabinoid system and can affect mood, memory, appetite, and pain perception.

Is Delta-8-THC safe?

The safety of Delta-8-THC, like other cannabinoids, depends on a range of factors including dosage, individual health conditions, and method of administration.

Delta-8-THC is generally considered less potent than Delta-9-THC, but it can still produce psychoactive effects and interact with other medications. The full safety profile of Delta-8-THC is not as well-documented as that of Delta-9-THC, largely because it simply has not been as extensively studied. It is important to take Delta-8-THC under the guidance of a prescribing specialist.

Is Delta-8-THC legal for medical use in the UK?

The legality of Delta-8-THC for medical use in the UK is complex and depends on its source and concentration. It must be prescribed by a qualified prescribing specialist and sourced from a licenced pharmacy. Self-medication without a prescription is not legal.

What are the potential benefits and risks of using Delta-8-THC?

The potential benefits of Delta-8-THC include reduced nausea, increased appetite, and pain relief - but research is still limited. Risks may include psychoactive effects, dizziness, and interactions with other medications. It is essential to weigh the benefits and risks with your prescribing specialist before starting treatment.

How can I discuss Delta-8-THC with my prescribing specialist?

When discussing Delta-8-THC with your prescribing specialist, be honest about your symptoms, medical history, and any previous cannabis use. Ask about the potential risks, benefits, and legal aspects of taking Delta-8-THC as part of your treatment. Your specialist can provide guidance based on the available research and your individual health needs.
