POM: Prescription-Only Medicine

In the UK, cannabis-based products are classified as Prescription-Only Medicines, which is the category of medicine that requires the most control or supervision from the government.

In the UK, medicines can be categorised in three ways. Those on the General Sales List, such as paracetamol, can be bought in a range of retail stores and outlets, whilst those in the Pharmacy category can be bought over the counter and under the supervision of a pharmacist. Prescription-Only Medicines can only be prescribed and by an authorised health care professional, and must be dispensed from a licensed pharmacy or dispensary.
