Functional neurological disorder natural plant-based treatment
In the UK, traditional treatment approaches for FND typically take a multidisciplinary approach, combining courses of physiotherapy or occupational therapy with pharmaceutical medications to manage symptoms. While these options work for many, for some, this does not provide adequate relief, and these medications can cause unwanted or unpleasant side effects. For these patients with FND, natural, plant-based alternatives may be an option worth exploring - and they’re available in the UK at Releaf.

A word from our specialist
“Neurological conditions are many and varied in how they can affect us. The more recognised conditions that are treatable with medical cannabis include epilepsy, where CBD mimics the action of the many anti-epileptic drugs; and multiple sclerosis, which the NHS can prescribe Sativex for. Medical Cannabis offers greater flexibility in the delivery of cannabinoid therapy for these conditions and hope in other areas of neurology, such as in the neurodegenerative conditions and the motor disorders.“

Am I eligible? What alternative treatment options are available for FND?
Functional Neurological Disorder, also known as FND, is a complex disorder that affects the nervous system, mimicking other neurological disorders and their symptoms, which can often lead to it taking a very long time to diagnose.
While its exact cause is still unknown, FND does present similar symptoms to other neurological disorders including seizures, tremors, muscle spams and pain, and so similar treatments are typically recommended - and in recent years, natural, plant-based products have emerged as one of these options.
Although research into the relationship between FND and these naturally occurring chemicals s still ongoing, the anecdotal evidence available so far appears promising.
Studies show, for people with FND, plant-based alternatives may be a useful component in treatment plans due to their pain-relieving and sedative qualities, and may also be able to benefit seizures, stress, and tremors.
Because these approaches are relatively new in the UK, and they are being used to treat a person’s health, it's important its applications are overseen by qualified healthcare professionals, and that the patients using these options receive personalised, first-class patient care.
