Doubled in less than a decade: the number of medical cannabis patients in the US

As Releaf’s Chief Operating Officer, I’ve had the pleasure of contributing behind the scenes to many of our blog features over the past 18 months.

Today, I’m excited to take a more personal step forward and join the ranks of our esteemed authors, by writing my first blog post as part of Releaf’s Internal Expert’s series. And, I couldn’t have picked a better time!

I’m thrilled to share some big news: we’ve expanded our formulary to include a brand-new, Releaf-exclusive cannabis-based extract cartridge: the SOMAÍ THC4000 Hybrid Essentials.

Contents

At Releaf, we’re always listening to patient feedback and keeping a close eye on innovation within the medical cannabis space. While dry herb vapourisers offer effective and rapid relief for many of our patients, we also understand the challenges: from fiddly dosing caps to the need to carry prescription pots when out and about.

That’s why we’ve worked with our partner, SOMAÍ Pharmaceuticals, to come up with a solution: a discreet, fast-acting, portable, and accessible alternative - The SOMAÍ THC4000 Hybrid Essentials vape cartridge, which is compatible with Releaf batteries.

The low-odour, practical SOMAÍ cartridges hold 0.5ml of purified cannabis oil that contains 400mg of THC. With no carrier oils or non-cannabis derived flavouring agents, each inhalation provides a dose that contains 80% THC, as well as minor cannabinoids like CBG, CBC, CBN, CBD and THCA.

Unlike dry herb vaporisers, this type of administration requires no prior preparation - just screw in your cartridge, turn on your Releaf battery, and you’re ready to go!

This is particularly useful for patients who need fast-acting relief and suffer from poor mobility or dexterity limitations, as well as for patients who are new to the world of medical cannabis and are after a simple solution to their health needs.

Now we’re able to cater to even more patients, keeping their preferences in mind.

They can be used alongside or instead of your current treatment, whether that’s sublingual cannabis oils or the dry herb flower. As always, our doctors will work with you closely to design a personalised treatment plan that’s tailored not only to your condition and symptoms, but also to your lifestyle needs and preferences too.

Seeking Simplicity? Welcome SOMAÌ THC400 Hybrid Essentials

Now that these cartridges have been added to our expanding formulary, we can provide three different formulations of cannabis-based treatments to suitable patients.

Because of the high THC concentration, and fast-acting onset time (typically between five and ten minutes) we take additional precautions when prescribing this product to patients who are fail, elderly, or have an increased cardiovascular risk. They are currently recommended for patients aged 25 and over, who are already prescribed medical cannabis flowers containing 20% THC or above.

That being said, all our patients can discuss this option with their consultant during their next appointment, and we welcome you to book in for a consultation if this is something you’re keen to explore.

With each first-time purchase of this prescribed product, a free Releaf branded battery is sent alongside, so that you can get started without needing to purchase any extra equipment.

How to use the Releaf battery

To turn on the battery, simply click the button 5 times, and the indicator light will turn white. We recommend preheating the oil before inhalation, which you can do by double-clicking the same button.

Hold the button down whilst inhaling. We’d suggest taking a short, gentle inhalation on your first administration, but the device will vibrate after three seconds to let you know that it is a third of the way through the maximum inhalation session.

To make things even better, because cannabinoids and terpenes release their therapeutic effects at different temperatures, on Releaf batteries the temperature and voltage can be adjusted, and the light will change colour to help you keep track of what setting it’s on.

Releaf batteries do come with an instruction manual that contains this information, as well as a compatible charger, and patients can purchase a back-up battery in the Releaf patient shop for £14.99 if they wish - so they’re never left without their medication.

General dosing advice for our new Releaf-exclusive product

Just like the Releaf batteries, on your first order of SOMAÍ THC4000 Hybrid Essentials, you will receive a leaflet that we’ve developed in-house to explain how and why this product was developed, and most importantly, how to take it.

But, as a quick run down:

  • Like any other kind of cannabis-based medicine: always start low and go slow.
  • Start with one short, gentle inhalation on the lowest temperature setting (inhale about half the depth of a normal breath).
  • Wait 15 minutes and asses how you feel.
  • If needed, take one more inhalation every 15 to 30 minutes until you feel symptomatic relief, with a maximum of ten inhalations in any 24-hour period.
  • Note down your progress so you can develop your own dosing routine that suitably meets your symptoms and stick to a consistent schedule.
  • And as always, until you know how this medication affects you, do not drive or operate any heavy machinery.

Final Thoughts

At Releaf, our goal is to make medical cannabis as accessible and personal as possible. The addition of SOMAÍ THC400 Hybrid Essentials marks a big step forward in that mission.

We’re proud to offer a discreet, fast-acting, and clinically sound new option to patients seeking simplicity without compromising on quality.

If this sounds like something you’d like to explore, speak with your prescribing clinician during your next consultation or sign up to join Releaf today. I’m very excited to see how this new addition helps more of our patients take control of their symptoms - one puff at a time.
