Medical cannabis treatments for muscular dystrophy
Muscular dystrophy is a collective term for genetic conditions that lead to muscle weakness and degradation. Over time, muscles waste away, potentially leading to a loss of mobility, depending on the severity of the condition.
Muscular dystrophy is often classified as a neurological disease because the symptoms are associated with the nerve impulses that should make muscles move and work properly. When muscles begin to weaken, patients may have difficulty lifting things and performing daily tasks; they may fall or experience muscle stiffness and pain; they may have cramps and spasms, and they may have difficulty walking.
There is no cure for muscular dystrophy, so treatment is entirely focused on managing symptoms and offering support. Medical cannabis for muscular dystrophy is emerging as a potential way to manage multiple symptoms and improve quality of life.

A word from our specialist
“No two patients with muscular dystrophy follow the same path. There are numerous types of the condition, and the rate at which muscles can weaken varies hugely from one person to the next.
For most patients, it's the gradual loss of strength and independence that's the hardest thing to deal with, finding small, everyday tasks more and more difficult to do over time.
Support that adapts as those needs change makes a real difference, which is why individualised care is so important.”

Can medical cannabis treatments help the symptoms of muscular dystrophy?
Yes, medical cannabis may help some patients deal with the symptoms they encounter with muscular dystrophy.
What is muscular dystrophy?
Muscular dystrophy is a general term for a range of genetic conditions that cause progressive muscle weakness and wasting. The muscle fibres degrade and die due to problems in the neuromuscular junction, where nerves should send messages that prompt muscles to move as expected.
While muscular dystrophy is often associated with limb weakness, it can also cause weaknesses in the heart and lungs, the digestive system, the brain, the eyes, and it may cause problems with swallowing.
Over time, patients may start to fall more often, and can lose the ability to walk.
Which forms of muscular dystrophy does this page cover?
A doctor may prescribe medical cannabis for adult neuromuscular diseases, such as the ones listed below, for potential relief of symptoms ranging from pain to sleeplessness.
Becker muscular dystrophy
This type of muscle dystrophy commonly affects the legs and the pelvis, making it difficult to run, walk, and take part in sports or other physical activities. Painful muscle cramps are common. These symptoms often appear from late childhood onward.
Other symptoms include, dizziness, shortness of breath, and palpitations. These symptoms should be reported to a medical professional immediately, as they could indicate that the patient has developed cardiomyopathy, where the heart is struggling to pump blood properly.
THC and CBD for Becker muscular dystrophy may be prescribed, in some cases, to help with the spasms and cramps commonly associated with this condition.
Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy
Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) is a category of genetic disorders that cause weakening of the upper arms, shoulders, thighs, and hips. Patients may find it difficult to walk up hills, run, or get up from the floor. Falls are common. In time, many LGMD patients will need a wheelchair.
While symptoms can start at any time, they most commonly appear between late teenage years and young adulthood. Some patients may experience heart and lung problems alongside the progressive limb weakness.
Myotonic dystrophy
There are two types of myotonic dystrophy: DM1 and DM2. DM1 is the more common variant in the UK, and the more severe condition. Myotonia is when muscles can’t relax after contracting, leading to stiffness and pain, particularly in the jaw or hands.
Facial weaknesses are common with DM1, followed by problems with grip. As the disease progresses, problems with the ankles and feet are common, leading to an increased risk of trips and falls.
Medical cannabis for myotonic dystrophy may be prescribed if a clinician thinks it can help with the chronic pain often associated with constant muscle stiffness.
Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD)
FSHD describes muscular dystrophy of the face, shoulders, and upper arms. This condition mostly presents in young adults, and there are two types, one of which is caused by a chromosome defect and the other by changes in a specific gene.
Patients may be unable to lift their arms above shoulder height, and their shoulder blades may stick out prominently. The facial weakness may make closing the eyes tricky or impossible, and speech can be affected.
As the disease progresses, spinal curvature can occur, and eventually, a loss of mobility.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (in adults)
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a condition that is diagnosed in childhood but affects around 2,500 people in the UK, of all ages. Symptoms present as significant muscle weakness, difficulty performing any physical activity, and a decline in fine motor skills. Patients may have heart and respiratory problems and will need mobility aids.
Life expectancy for adults with DMD has improved in the last 25 years. In 2001, people with DMD regularly didn’t survive beyond their teenage years. Today, with support, people may live into their 40s.
Can medical cannabis treatment help with my muscular dystrophy symptoms?
Some patients find that administering medical cannabis can help reduce the impact of some symptoms associated with muscular dystrophy:
|
Muscular dystrophy symptom |
How medical cannabis could help |
Impact on quality of life |
|
Muscle cramps and spasms |
Medical cannabis is linked to a reduction in muscle spasms, which is why it’s an ingredient in the medication Sativex, often prescribed for multiple sclerosis (another neurological condition) spasms. |
A reduction in spasms could help patients regain control of their movements and improve their confidence, particularly in social situations or when performing daily tasks. |
|
Chronic pain |
Many patients are prescribed medical cannabis for both musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain, which can both occur with muscular dystrophy. Some evidence suggests that medical cannabis may have a therapeutic effect on both the endocannabinoid system and nerve impulses that manage pain. |
A reduced perception of pain can help elevate the mood, make daily tasks easier, and improve sleep patterns. |
|
Sleep disorders |
Medical cannabis for muscular dystrophy may have a two-fold effect on sleep; reduced pain levels can aid better sleep, and the medication is also associated with relaxation that can lead to better nighttime habits. |
Good sleep hygiene and less disturbed sleep may lead to improved mood, reduced pain levels, and better focus and concentration. |
|
Fatigue |
Where fatigue is caused by pain and sleeplessness, the mechanisms highlighted above may help reduce fatigue levels, in some cases. |
Lower fatigue levels can lead to an increased enjoyment of life and the ability to do more, in both work and leisure aspects of life. |
|
Depression |
Medical cannabis may, for some people, elevate the mood, leading to a potential reduction in depression and anxiety, both of which are common symptoms of any progressive, chronic condition. |
An elevated mood helps prevent isolation by increasing the opportunity for social interactions, and can make daily tasks easier. |
How does the endocannabinoid system relate to muscular dystrophy?
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a network of receptors that respond to cannabinoids; both endocannabinoids, produced by your body, and cannabinoids from plants, for example, medical cannabis. A well-balanced ECS promotes overall wellness, impacting aspects of health from sleep to mood.
Research suggests that a dysregulated ECS can lead to various symptoms, including some associated with muscular dystrophy. An article in the August 2026 edition of the journal Molecular Metabolism states that “...the EC system, and more specifically the CB1 receptor, influences skeletal muscle development and function,” and that emerging data suggests that cannabinoids like CBD may have a potentially therapeutic effect on musculoskeletal conditions.
What does the research say about cannabis and muscular dystrophy?
As well as the general impact of a healthy ECS on overall wellness, there are other potential ways medical cannabis could improve the quality of life for muscular dystrophy patients. Constant chronic pain can lead to sleeplessness and more intense fatigue. One 2022 review of medical cannabis sleep studies concluded with “moderate certainty” that the medication promoted at least small improvements in sleep quality versus a placebo, and in pain levels, even for patients with chronic pain.
Depression can be another serious symptom associated with muscular dystrophy, due to the degenerative nature of the condition. Another 2022 report, this time in Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience, stated that ECS dysregulation is possibly linked to the onset of depression, making medical cannabis a potential source of relief for some patients.
How does THC interact with chronic muscle pain?
CBD and THC for muscular dystrophy could, potentially, offer pain relief that may reduce the complete reliance on conventional pain medication.
A 2024 report published in the journal Cureus assessed 290 patients suffering from musculoskeletal pain. These patients reported significant reductions in pain levels after administering cannabinoids. On a pain scale from 1-10, self-reported average pain levels fell from 6.16 to 3.89.
Patient stories also offer hope. One Releaf patient had this to say:
“Up until maybe six months ago, a few months into taking cannabis, I was using my walking stick constantly. I didn’t go anywhere without it because I couldn’t manage the pain, and I needed that to walk. But I’ve hardly picked it up for about four or five months. Not only that, but I’ve cut back on drinking. I probably have more of an appetite because I wasn’t eating. I’m sleeping better. It really has been life-changing for me.” Alistair, Releaf patient
What forms of Releaf medical cannabis can be prescribed for muscular dystrophy?
There are now several conditions medical cannabis can be prescribed for in the UK, including symptoms associated with muscular dystrophy. Medical cannabis is available in formats including:
· Oils
· Pastilles
· Dried flower for vaporisers
· Capsules
When you book a consultation with a Releaf clinician, you may discuss different medical cannabis strains that are more appropriate for your treatment. Different strains offer a different balance of potentially therapeutic compounds, including cannabinoids and terpenes.
CBD, THC, and terpenes are some of the most commonly discussed compounds of medical cannabis. CBD for muscular dystrophy may be taken as an isolate (without other medical cannabis compounds), but for some patients, it may not offer the same potentially therapeutic effects as full-spectrum medical cannabis.
CBD and THC for muscular dystrophy may help with pain management, sleep, and reduced muscle spasms. Your clinician will aim to offer a prescription with the right balance of compounds to best address your symptoms.

FAQs on medical cannabis for muscular dystrophy
Can medical cannabis reduce my muscle spasms and cramps?
Medical cannabis is already prescribed for other conditions associated with muscle spasticity, such as multiple sclerosis. The same anti-spasm action could help offer relief for the spasms and cramps associated with muscular dystrophy.
How does medical cannabis interact with my cardiac medications?
Evidence is still emerging on how CBD and THC for muscular dystrophy may interact with heart medications. A 2026 article from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) suggests that there is a risk of adverse effects, but also suggests that some doses of medical cannabis are protective for the heart. Your clinician will consider all your current medications before deciding if medical cannabis is right for you.
Can medical cannabis help with muscular dystrophy fatigue?
When considering cannabis for muscular dystrophy UK treatments, fatigue is one symptom your clinician may discuss. Some patients find that administering medical cannabis helps improve sleep patterns, which can take the edge off the fatigue associated with muscular dystrophy.
I have some respiratory involvement from my muscular dystrophy. Can I still be considered for medical cannabis treatment?
In many cases, yes, you can still have a conversation with a clinician about medical cannabis for muscular dystrophy. You may want to avoid vapes and vaporisers, and instead look at formats such as pastilles or oils.
Which medical cannabis formats tend to work best for muscular dystrophy symptoms?
The format you’ll be prescribed is usually based on personal preferences, lifestyle, and muscular dystrophy symptoms. If you have respiratory issues, for example, your clinician may recommend that you avoid vapes and vaporisers.
