Online cannabis dispensaries in the UK: How they really work

What is a cannabis dispensary, and how does it work in the UK?

In the UK, getting a medical cannabis prescription isn’t like popping down to the chemist. This blog breaks down how online cannabis dispensaries actually work, why your meds can take a few days to arrive, and how Releaf ensures safe, consistent delivery every time (even during a snowy Christmas). From regulation to real people, we explain what’s really going on behind the scenes.

What is a cannabis dispensary, and how does it work in the UK?

Legal medical cannabis access is relatively new here in the UK, and so much of what’s in the public consciousness comes from what we’ve seen in movies, TV shows, or news stories from (countries like the USA and Canada) places with very different systems.

In those countries, the term “dispensary” usually refers to a walk-in shop, open to the public (sometimes with a few restrictions), with shelves lined with products and a budtender on hand to guide you through your options.

That’s not how it works here.

In the UK, medical cannabis is extremely strictly regulated. It can only be prescribed by a specialist doctor (who is listed on the GMC specialist registry) and must be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy that meets specific standards for controlled drug storage, processing, and supply.

There are no walk-in dispensaries, and there’s no over-the-counter access, even for private patients.

That can come as a surprise to people who search for things like “cannabis dispensary near me” or “online cannabis pharmacy UK,” expecting something more akin to how it works in North America. Even in Australia, which has a very similar medical cannabis model to us here in the UK, most local pharmacies are able to fill medical cannabis prescriptions.

So, to help dispel these myths and continue the battle against the indentured stigma that cannabis medicine faces in the UK, we’ll go into detail on how it actually works in this blog.

Here we explain everything from why you can’t pick up your medication at your local high street pharmacy, to why it sometimes takes a few extra days for your order to arrive, and what procedures we’ve implemented here at Releaf to make sure the whole process is as smooth, seamless, and fast as possible.

Why can’t I fill my UK medical cannabis prescription at a normal pharmacy?

Most high-street pharmacies aren’t licensed to handle Schedule 2 medications like medical cannabis. These prescriptions require specialist storage, controlled drug protocols, and additional record-keeping, which are systems that most community chemists simply don’t have in place.

Why your cannabis medication isn’t dispatched instantly when you pay for your prescription

If you’ve ordered prescriptions online before, you might expect your medical cannabis to arrive just as quickly. But because it’s classified as a Schedule 2 controlled drug, there are extra steps involved, and those steps are built into the UK’s legal framework, not set by individual clinics.

One of the biggest surprises for new patients is that the pharmacy can’t begin processing your medication until it receives a physical, printed copy of the prescription

And once the physical copy of your prescription arrives, it doesn't just get instantly dispensed. There is then the next layer of checks that must be legally completed before any medical cannabis oil, medical cannabis flower, or THC vape is sent out. These extra steps all take a little time, but they also ensure your medication is dispensed safely, legally, and with care.

What can feel like a delay (and let’s not beat around the bush - these do cause delays from time to time) is just the system working exactly as it has been designed to - and the more that all clinics and pharmacies comply with these regulations, the better it is for the industry and patients as a whole.

What makes medical cannabis pharmacies different?

By now, it should be crystal clear that dispensing medical cannabis in the UK isn’t a quick or casual process, and that’s because the pharmacies involved aren’t ordinary either.

Unlike regular chemists, specialist cannabis pharmacies must meet far stricter regulatory standards. They operate under a series of Home Office and MHRA licences, including a Controlled Drugs Licence, a Specials Manufacturing Licence, and various import and export authorisations.

These facilities are built for precision.

Secure storage, temperature control, patient-specific batching, and specialist labelling systems are the norm. Some pharmacies (like our partner pharmacy) also carry out extra quality checks beyond the legal minimum. This can involve retesting batches for things like microbial content, heavy metals, and accurate cannabinoid and terpene profiles.

Why Releaf only works with one designated pharmacy

Some clinics allow patients to choose where their prescription gets sent, but at Releaf, we’ve deliberately taken a different approach.

By working with a single, trusted pharmacy partner, we’re able to ensure every stage of the logistic line and dispensing process is consistent, efficient, and carefully managed. That means that we always know exactly how much of each cannabis-based treatment option is available for prescription, which means we can reliably manage stock levels.

Not very long ago, stock issues plagued the industry as a whole, and so we worked on a solution for our patients. With our model, there is faster prescription turnaround and far better communication between the clinical and dispensing teams.

It also allows us to maintain a direct line of communication with our pharmacy, so if any issues do pop up, we can address them quickly and clearly. All pharmacy staff have been through extensive medical cannabis specific training, meaning they have a much fuller understanding of the regulations and requirements put in place, and how to best handle the process.

This is all designed to support better outcomes for our patients, not restrict their options. We’ve found that by streamlining the process (rather than fragmenting it across multiple pharmacies, things are smoother and safer for everyone.

A Christmas story: Delivering prescriptions by hand

The festive period is always a bit tricky. Businesses close for longer than usual, postal services slow down, and even open pharmacies often run with limited staff. That’s why, in mid-November 2024, we emailed every Releaf patient to remind them to place their prescription order a little earlier than usual.

Even with that heads-up, a few scripts were still at risk of missing the window. So one of our specialist clinicians, Dr Imran Ali, stepped in to hand-deliver prescriptions to our partner pharmacy, driving  in the sleet and snow, so no patient was left without their medication.

This kind of action speaks volumes. Going above and beyond isn’t a slogan for us, it’s how we operate. It’s why Releaf has become the UK’s fastest-growing and most trusted medical cannabis clinic, with over 100,000 community members and counting.

FAQS

What’s the difference between a dispensary and a pharmacy?

In the UK, “pharmacy” is the correct legal term, with “chemist” often being used in day-to-day life. It refers to a licensed facility that dispenses medication under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. “Dispensary” is often used informally (especially online or in media from other countries), but there’s no separate system. All cannabis prescriptions in the UK are filled by licensed pharmacies that meet strict regulatory standards.

Why does the pharmacy need a physical copy of my UK medical cannabis prescription?

This isn’t a Releaf-specific rule. It’s industry-wide.

Under UK law, before Schedule 2 prescriptions are dispensed by a pharmacy, they need to hold a ‘hard copy’ of the paper prescription. It’s a requirement designed to reduce any risk of fraud, ensure accurate record-keeping, and maintain full accountability. Digital systems alone aren’t permitted for Schedule 2 dispensing.

Can I choose my own pharmacy to send my medical cannabis script to?

Not with Releaf, and that’s intentional.

While it might seem convenient to select your own pharmacy, clinics that allow this often run into delays, stock mismatches, or miscommunications. Our model keeps things simple.

Why does my medication sometimes take longer than the 2 to 4 working day delivery window?

There are a few reasons your medication might take a little longer than expected.

The most common is staffing, both at Releaf and our partner pharmacy. Fewer staff members work on the weekends, and this is especially true during bank holidays or busy seasonal periods. If you need your meds fast, it’s best to order earlier in the week.

There are sometimes (very rarely, but worth mentioning) unavoidable delays related to prescription processing, stock availability, or delivery partner issues. While we do everything we can to keep things within the 2 to 4 working day window, these factors occasionally slow things down.

If that happens, our team is always here to help, and we’ll keep you updated every step of the way.

Closing thought: There’s care behind every order

We totally understand that delays in medication delivery can be more than just frustrating. Without your meds, real issues can crop up alarmingly quickly.

That is one of the main reasons why we have put such strict processes in place. Not just to satisfy the regulators, not to ‘make life easy’ for our staff, but to try and do everything we can to make sure you get your meds when you expect them.

Each step, from the physical script to secure storage and final dispatch, exists for a reason, and behind those steps are real people who genuinely care about getting it right.

At Releaf, we work hard to make the system smoother, clearer, and more reliable, so you can spend less time chasing medication and more time feeling better.

Can you get a medical cannabis prescription in the UK?

Although recreational cannabis is still illegal in the UK, medical cannabis has been legally available to patients suffering from a wide range of health concerns since November 2018. However, obtaining it through the NHS is quite challenging, which is why many patients are turning to private clinics.
