Medical cannabis treatments for TMJ dysfunction
Medical cannabis, containing THC, may be prescribed by specialists to help manage the symptoms of TMJ dysfunction. These symptoms include jaw pain, stress bruxism, and muscle tightness. Although not a frontline treatment, medical cannabis is considered when conventional treatments fail to provide sufficient relief.
Medical cannabis may assist by easing jaw tension and relaxing the surrounding muscles. It may also reduce inflammation and modulate how your nervous system processes pain signals, a welcome addition for people struggling with this chronic condition.
If conventional treatments aren’t working, it's certainly worth heading to our medical cannabis eligibility checker.

A word from our specialist
“TMJ dysfunction isn’t only associated with jaw pain. The condition also brings with it a whole host of symptoms, such as headaches, eating difficulties and broken sleep, and can be a part of a wider group of conditions called central sensitisation syndrome.
One of the most difficult aspects is how varied the causes behind the condition can be. Two patients with very similar symptoms can have entirely different triggers driving them, which is why each person needs to be assessed individually.”

Can medical cannabis treatments help the symptoms of TMJ dysfunction?
Medical cannabis may be prescribed as a second line treatment option for some patients struggling with the symptoms of TMJ dysfunction.
What is TMJ dysfunction?
Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) is the medical name for TMJ dysfunction. It encompasses a range of conditions affecting the hinge joints that connect your skull to your jaw. People with this condition experience pain when they eat, speak, or chew. The condition is often characterised by a distinct clicking sound when the affected person opens their mouth.
Common causes of TMJ disorder include jaw injuries, teeth grinding (bruxism), and arthritis. Another often-overlooked cause is stress. People under chronic stress can unknowingly clench their jaws or grind their teeth during sleep, leading to sleep disruption.
What symptoms does TMJ dysfunction cause?
According to the British Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, a person with TMJ may notice clicking, crackling, crunching, or popping when yawning or opening their mouth. These sounds indicate a displacement of the hinge joint.
Additional TMJ dysfunction symptoms include:
Discomfort when talking or chewing
Dull or aching pain in the face
Difficulty fully opening the mouth
High-pitched ringing in the ear
Jaw tenderness or pain
Locking jaw
Headache
Earache
Many jaw disorders share the same symptoms, so it isn’t possible to self-diagnose. However, an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor or dentist can take your history and perform certain exams to determine if you have TMJ dysfunction. These include dental exams, X-rays, and CT scans. They can also help determine if cannabis for TMJ dysfunction is a suitable path forward.
What treatments are currently available for TMJ dysfunction?
There are various non-invasive, invasive, and alternative treatments for TMJ dysfunction.
Treatment Category | Common Examples | Primary Goal |
Non-Invasive | Splints, physiotherapy, ice packs, relaxation | Symptom management & tension release |
Pharmacological | NSAIDs, Amitriptyline | Pain modulation & inflammation reduction |
Procedural/Medical | Botox, corticosteroid injections, surgery | Targeted structural or muscular intervention |
Alternative | Medical cannabis (oils, vapes, flower) | Chronic pain relief & muscle relaxation |
When conventional treatments fail to reduce TMJ symptoms, medical cannabis for temporomandibular pain works well as a complementary option. Aside from this, a more invasive treatment may be necessary. This often includes surgery or physical therapy manipulations.
Can medical cannabis treatment help with my TMJ dysfunction symptoms?
Much research suggests that medical cannabis may assist in treating TMJ dysfunction symptoms. People with this condition struggle with restricted jaw movement and chronic pain, significantly impairing their quality of life. Medical cannabis for TMJ dysfunction may be used as an alternative to reduce pain and headaches, but not the mechanical defects of the condition.
A study published in the Journal of Pharmaceutics titled “The Therapeutic Potential of Cannabidiol in the Management of Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain” found that conventional treatments, including physical therapy and medications, have varying side effects and degrees of success. Cannabis, on the other hand, may offer improved quality of life due to the anti-inflammatory effects associated with the treatment.
Can medical cannabis help with TMJ-related headaches and facial pain?
Medical cannabis for jaw pain and TMJ dysfunction is increasingly recognised for its ability to reduce chronic facial pain and tension headaches. Cannabis contains more than 400 active compounds, including cannabidiol (CBD), that directly influence endocannabinoid receptors in your body. This includes the CB1 receptor, which controls how pain is perceived. Their functions include reducing pain, inducing muscle relaxation, lowering inflammation, and improving sleep quality.
What is the stress-bruxism cycle, and how does medical cannabis address it?
Teeth grinding (bruxism) happens when your jaws clench tightly enough to press the upper and lower teeth into one another. When your lower jaw moves side to side whilst clenched, the teeth grind, notably the molars. This causes a lot of pain and will eventually damage the temporomandibular joint and teeth. Whilst some people grind their teeth in their sleep, others do so as a result of stress.
During a stressful or anxious moment, the muscles tense as your body enters fight, flight, or freeze mode. This includes the muscles in the face. Chronic stress and anxiety disorders cause people to frequently clench their jaws and grind their teeth, which can lead to TMJ dysfunction. Unfortunately, this leads to facial pain, damaged teeth, and jaw injury.
Luckily, medical CBD for TMJ dysfunction has shown promise in improving the bruxism stress cycle by relaxing the jaw muscles and reducing feelings of anxiety.
How does the endocannabinoid system relate to TMJ dysfunction?
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a regulatory system in the body whose primary role is to help maintain stability (homeostasis).
It is responsible for:
Pain perception
Stress and mood
Muscle tone
Inflammation
Immune responses
Movement
Sleep
Appetite
TMJ dysfunction causes pain and inflammation and directly interacts with the ECS. The temporomandibular joint and nearby muscles contain many cannabinoid receptors, including CB1 and CB2. These are responsible for pain signalling and immune response, respectively, which are the primary targets for CBD for TMJ dysfunction.
What does the research say about cannabis and TMJ dysfunction?
A 2024 randomised, double-blind clinical trial titled “Cannabidiol Intervention for Muscular Tension, Pain, and Sleep Bruxism Intensity” concludes that out of 60 participants, 57.4% had reduced pain, 42.1% had less muscle retention, and 51% had a reduction in bruxism after using an intraoral CBD formulation of 10% strength. However, this is only one of many studies demonstrating the efficacy of CBD for TMJ pain management.
A systematic review on Cannabidiol and TMD disorder research published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine in June of 2025, looks into 10 studies comprising clinical trials as well as animal models. It finds that CBD overwhelmingly demonstrated anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and muscle-relaxant effects on those with chronic myofascial TMDs and bruxism when administered topically and orally.
The largest survey of active UK medical cannabis patients ever conducted, involving 1,669 respondents, reveals real, measurable benefits for medical cannabis use. When asked about its effectiveness:
97% reported an improved quality of life
91% were likely to recommend it to others who are eligible
88% reported having no side effects
78% rated the treatment as extremely or very effective
72% were prescribed medical cannabis to treat more than one condition.
