Thiol

Thiol compounds are sulphur-containing chemicals produced by cannabis cultivars that contribute to their distinctive dank, skunky smell. Thiols make up a small part of the plant's terpene profile, which affects both its aroma and potential therapeutic effects.

Do all cannabis cultivars contain thiols?

Yes, but in varying concentrations. Some cultivars, especially those with a heavy skunky fragrance, tend to have higher levels of thiols.

Do thiols affect the therapeutic effects of cannabis?

Thiols themselves don't have direct therapeutic effects, but they are part of the overall terpene profile that can enhance the effects of cannabinoids like THC and CBD. This is known as the entourage effect, where the different compounds in cannabis work together to improve treatment outcomes.

Do thiols have any side effects?

Thiols primarily affect the smell of cannabis and don’t usually cause side effects on their own. However, if you are sensitive to strong odours, you may prefer a strain with a different terpene profile. Your prescribing specialist will work with you to find the most suitable option for your treatment needs.
