Can medical cannabis be used to treat anxiety?

In the UK, the two most common conditions treated with medical cannabis, or cannabis-based medicines, are pain and anxiety. For those with anxiety, medical cannabis treatments can be therapeutic or beneficial because of their effect on stress and anxiety responses.

Cannabis contains different chemical classes, some of which are cannabinoids like THC and CBD. Cannabinoids can interact with the brain’s serotonin production, which is responsible for balancing and stabilising mood, and have been shown to alter anxiety responses in a dose-dependent manner.

While it's generally well accepted that CBD has stress relieving, and mood-uplifting properties, THC has shown to improve anxiety at certain doses, while exacerbating it at high concentrations, which is why it is important cannabis treatments are monitored by healthcare professionals.

In the UK, GMC registered specialist doctors like those that work for Releaf can prescribe medical cannabis in a guided manner, tailoring the treatment to suit the individual - so each patient receives the most beneficial and effective care.
